Lighting submittal checklist: what to verify before it goes to the engineer

Most lighting submittals come back for small things: a listing that is not on the cut sheet, a driver option missing from the catalog number, a CCT that differs from the fixture schedule. Here is what to check, in the order engineers usually read it.

Start with the fixture schedule

• Match every fixture type on the schedule to one cut sheet, and write the full catalog number on it.
• Check voltage, mounting, housing size and lumen package against the schedule, not only the spec section.
• If the spec names a basis-of-design product, note whether you are submitting it or an equal.

Listings and certifications

• UL or ETL listing to the standard the spec cites, and the location rating (dry, damp, wet).
• DLC listing when required, at the tier the spec asks for (Standard or Premium). Attach the QPL record, not only a logo.
• ENERGY STAR, IC rating, emergency listing or other certifications the spec names.

Performance

• Delivered lumens and efficacy (lm/W) at the specified CCT and CRI. Efficacy often drops at warmer CCTs and higher CRI.
• CCT, CRI, R9 and color consistency (MacAdam steps) if specified.
• Operating temperature range. Convert °C cut sheets to °F before comparing.
• Photometric file (IES) when the spec requires it.

Driver and controls

• Dimming protocol (0-10 V, DALI, phase) and the dimming range, for example to 1% or 10%.
• If a requirement is met only by a driver option, add that option to the catalog number on the submittal.
• Emergency battery or generator transfer device, when the fixture type needs one.

Documents engineers ask for

• Warranty statement with the term the spec requires, covering fixture and driver.
• Buy American or BABA letter on publicly funded projects, when the spec includes the clause.
• Recycled content, country of origin or LEED data if listed in the submittal requirements.
